How it works

  1. Type your words, one per line or separated by commas, or start from one of the theme lists. You can use 1 to 40 words of 2 to 20 letters each.
  2. Add a title if you like and choose your options: uppercase or lowercase letters, the first letter as a hint, and whether to keep accented letters.
  3. Check the live preview. Shuffle again for a different set of scrambles, and switch the answers on or off to check them.
  4. Download the PDF in A4 or US Letter, or print straight away. Page 1 has the numbered scrambled words with answer lines; the answers are on a separate sheet.

Tips for a good word scramble

  • For younger children or beginners, turn on the first-letter hint. Knowing where the word starts makes even longer words manageable.
  • Use this week's spelling words. Unscrambling makes pupils look closely at every letter, which is exactly what spelling practice needs.
  • Stick to one theme, such as animals, food or a topic you are teaching. The theme itself is a useful clue.
  • Lowercase letters are often easier for young readers; uppercase suits older solvers.
  • Ten to fifteen words is a comfortable sheet for most groups. Mix short and long words so everyone gets a quick win early on.
  • Each worksheet has a puzzle code. The same words, settings and code give exactly the same scrambles again, so note the code if you want to reprint the sheet later. Nothing is saved on the site.

For spelling and language learning

A word scramble turns a plain word list into a small puzzle. To solve it, pupils have to recall the word and then check it letter by letter, which reinforces spelling far better than copying a list.

It works just as well for vocabulary in a new language: type the words from this unit and pupils practise both meaning and spelling. Print one version for the whole class, or shuffle again for a second version so neighbours cannot simply copy.

For seniors and brain training

Unscrambling words is a gentle workout for memory and concentration. Activity coordinators can make a sheet around a season, a holiday or a shared memory, such as old trades or garden plants.

Turn on the first-letter hint for people who find it harder to get started, and choose uppercase letters for easier reading. A group can also solve the sheet together.

Frequently asked questions

Is the word scramble maker really free?

Yes. You can make and print as many unscramble worksheets as you like without an account, and there are no ads.

How many words can I use?

From 1 to 40 words, each 2 to 20 letters long. Duplicates are removed automatically, and spaces and hyphens are left out of the scrambled letters.

Can a scrambled word come out the same as the original?

No. Every scrambled word differs from the original, unless the word consists of only one repeated letter.

Is there an answer sheet?

Yes. The PDF has the worksheet on the first page and the answers on a separate sheet, so you can hand out the puzzle on its own.

Can I print the same worksheet again later?

Yes. With the same words, settings and puzzle code you get exactly the same scrambles. Worksheets are not saved on the site, so note down the code.

Are the words I type stored?

Anonymous usage statistics are stored to improve the site, including the words and settings you enter, but no IP address or user ID. The privacy page explains the details.

Can my pupils solve the scramble on screen?

No, Puzzlino makes word scrambles for printing. You can show the answers in the preview, but solving online is not available.
